‘My mother was a dominatrix in Dublin in the 1980s’
Money was tight in the 1980s, but Susan Bluechild’s mother had a rather unusual way of earning money – as a dominatrix in her middle class South County Dublin home

“I must have been about 16 when I came home from school and saw my mother, who was 49 at the time, dressed only in a black basque, stockings and high heeled shoes with a whip in her hand which she was using to lash a man dressed only in a thong, who was hoovering the front room.
Although my mother had already discussed the idea [of becoming a dominatrix] with me, I didn’t know she was actually going through with it, so I was quite unprepared — but I also found the whole scenario very entertaining.
