Spencer Matthews has revealed how he was snubbed by Cillian Murphy after an awkward encounter at last year’s Baftas ceremony.

The Cork actor scooped up a Best Actor award at this year’s Baftas for his role in Oppenheimer, and in 2023 earned himself a leading actor nomination for Peaky Blinders.

And while he was the man of the hour at February’s ceremony thanks to his lead role in the Christopher Nolan blockbuster, Cillian also received heaps of attention last year from fans and famous faces alike.

One of his admirers was none other than Vogue Williams’ husband and former Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews, who admitted that he fawned over the Irishman at the event.

But things didn’t go to plan, he revealed on his 6 Degrees podcast, telling co-host Jamie Laing how he got “completely burned” by the actor after approaching him.

“I got completely burned by him, like crazy burned, at the Baftas last year,” Spencer began.

“I’d made a thing of it with Vogue, because Vogue and I were there, and I was like, ‘I’m going to give Cillian a hug.’

“She was just like, ‘Don’t do that.’”

An exasperated Jamie asked: “You wanted to go and give Cillian Murphy a hug?!”

Spencer continued: “I went over, and I was stood behind him kind of like a shadow just on his shoulder and he was chatting to like, three or four people.

“I was stood behind him for about 20 seconds till it became awkward enough that the people he was talking to (said), ‘There’s someone behind you.’

“And he spun around and looked at me, and I was just like, ‘Hey mate,’ and he was like, ‘Hi’ like, ‘Can I help you?’

“And I was just like, ‘Good luck tonight,’ and he was like, ‘Thanks’.

“I was like, ‘Cool. See you later. I hope you do well’. He was just like, ‘Right, see you later’, and then turned around and carried on chatting,” he said, leaving his co-host in stitches.

The father of three then made a note to self to “make sure to have good chat or at least have prepped when approaching Cillian Murphy”.

Finishing off the tragic tale, Spencer added: “He just couldn’t care at all. Vogue literally struggled to talk to me for the next 10 minutes. She was like, ‘Jesus Christ, did you have to do that?’”
