Our expert delves into the shiny world of lip oils for super slick and volumised smackers

How to achieve ‘clean girl’ aesthetic

Triona McCarthy

Rightio, we need to talk about lip oils as it’s literally on everyone’s lips right now!

It’s time to pack away your lipsticks and glosses as lip oils are reigning supreme in the ‘clean make-up’ aesthetic that’s still trending it seems.

It’s not just happening on Instagram or TikTok as I’ve seen plenty of oiled lips on the red carpets lately.

I even saw Saltburn star Barry Keoghan having a lip oil moment when he was getting prepped for the Baftas with MUA Christine Nelli popping Charlotte Tilbury Magic Lip Oil Crystal Elixir (€35, Brown Thomas) on his kissers!

Selena Gomez has also struck oil as her brand Rare Beauty has launched The Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil (€22, spacenk.com). So why have we all become so smitten with them?

I love that lip oils give me shiny lips without the stickiness of gloss. It also nourishes my lips and keep them looking juicy. I feel it was Dior that really started the hype with their always-sold-out Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil (€45, arnotts.ie). The glossy lip oil, infused with cherry oil, keeps lips slick and enhances the lips natural colour. It’s a hit with TikTok users. The formula adapts to all lip colours to bring out a rosy glow, and its non-greasy, non-sticky oil texture gives lips a mirror-shine effect.

Irish beauty kween and make-up artist Keilidh Cashell is bridging the gap between the richness of a balm and the feel of a lipstick with her Kash Beauty Lip Oils (€14.95, kashbeauty.com) that give a sheer, hydrating balm with a perfect hint of colour.

Then we have the lovely Pippa O’Connor Ormond’s Poco Beauty Lip Oil Treatment (€21, pocobeauty.com). I’m all for anything that makes my lips look bigger, and Pippa’s lip oil has hyaluronic spheres and lightweight oils to give immediate hydration and enhance lip volume. Thank God her beautiful jeans don’t have the same plumping effect!

Finally for our luxury lovers, La Mer The Lip Volumizer (€85, arnotts.ie), which is super spendy but, like all of its products, it uses the best ingredients and is of really luxurious quality.

My mum Margaret felt the lip oils weren’t for her so I gave her this newbie to try out for me as it gives a high-shine gloss that plumps, perfects and protects lips in one glide and comes in five shades. She struck it rich with this one and it looks super slick on her!
