Why Cheltenham's Ladies Day is now called Style Wednesday

More commonly known as Ladies Day, The Jockey Club abandoned the name back in 2018 opting for titles including Day 2, Festival Wednesday and Style Wednesday.

Awards for the best dressed will now be open to men and women who attend the races at Prestbury Park.

Aside from the rebrand away from a focus on ladies fashion, the day’s awards will also focus on sustainability.

Those participating have been encouraged to wear outfits already in their wardrobes or that have been bought from retailers that specialise in pre-loved fashion.

Named The Slow Fashion Awards, winner’s prizes include a £4,000 necklace from luxury jewellery brand, Boodles, tickets to Ladies Day at Epsom this year and tickets to next year’s Style Wednesday at Cheltenham.

“This year we re-launched day two of The Festival as Style Wednesday to celebrate ‘fast horses, slow fashion’, encouraging racegoers to make more sustainable fashion choices, showcasing their unique and personal style, and to share the stories behind their amazing outfits with friends, family and on social media,” a spokesperson for Cheltenham Racecourse said.

“This includes re-wearing outfits they already have in their wardrobes, purchasing timeless garments to wear again and again and also buying from retailers specialising in pre-loved clothing,” they added.

Though Ladies Day is no longer a features of the Chetlenhan event, The Jockey Club still holds Ladies Day at other big racing events, including at the Grand National Festival and Epsom Downs.
