The return of The Young Offenders after a four-year break: ‘We all saw there are so many more directions for the characters to go’

Back for a new series and making the switch to BBC One, this hit Irish comedy may have matured over time, but the same can’t be said for the characters we have grown to love

It is a lovely sunny day in Cork, hurtling towards the depths of summer 2023. There are hundreds of people enjoying the wide variety of food on offer at the famous Marina Market, and they’re all completely oblivious that they are just a few feet away from some of the most recognisable Corkonians this side of Cillian Murphy.

A group of journalists are smuggled behind the scenes at the market, revealing the cramped interior (and even some of the exterior) of the MacSweeney home, complete with the very Irish interior design trend of having way too many nick-nacks strewn across every available surface. There is no sense of the huge, open lots you’d expect: this is a tight fit, with appropriately claustrophobia-inducing small rooms within an overly cramped Irish home.
